The Czech Association for the Study of Religions
is a civic association dedicated to the promotion of the Study of Religions.
Background information
The Czech Association for the Study of Religions is a civic association dedicated to promoting the scientific study of religion. It is an independent organisation bringing together researchers from various disciplines on the basis of the broadly conceived study of religions. It was founded in 1990 as the Association for the Study of Religions. After the division of the Czechoslovak state, the successor organization of the Association for the Study of Religions in the Czech Republic became the Czech Association for the Study of Religions, later the Czech Association for the Study of Religions.
Our mission
The Czech Association for the Study of Religions contributes to the development of the study of religions as an independent discipline in the Czech Republic and to closer cooperation with international study of religions. It organises conferences and lectures and publishes the biannual journal Religio - A Journal for the Study of Religions. In addition to this journal, it also publishes newsletters informing about the Association's activities and maintains this website.
International cooperation
The Czech Association for the Study or Religions is a member organization of the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR) and the European Association for the Study of Religions (EASR). It has organized or co-organized four international conferences, namely two special conferences of the International Association for the History of Religions (Brno, 1994 and 1999), the eighth annual conference of the European Association for the Study of Religions (Brno, 2008) and the conference of the International Study of Religion in Eastern and Central Europe Association (Brno, 2010).
Administrative authorities
The highest body of the CASR is the General Assembly of members, which elects members of the CASR Committee, approves changes in the statutes, etc. Between the meetings of the General Assembly, the activities of the CASR are managed by the Committee, which consists of a Chairman, two Vice-Chairmen, a Secretary, a Treasury, members representing the branches, or other elected members.
The activities of the Committee shall be monitored by the Appeal and Review Committee, which may be asked to review any decision of the Committee.
Membership
Anyone with a serious professional interest in the study of religion may become a member of the CASR. Application for membership requires a written recommendation from two current members of the CASR. The annual membership fee is 400 CZK for regular members and 200 CZK for students and retirees. It is payable by bank transfer to the Society's account: 60332621/0100 (Komerční banka). The contribution includes a subscription to Religio - A Journal for the Study of Religions for the year.
